In the Indonesian tradition of wayang kulit, fire illuminates the puppets & their shadows to bring the story to life. It can even be said that the fire carries the story. In the IFF teaser as the fire moves along the piece of string, it illuminates objects from Indonesian culture (statues, games, faces), and it too carries stories - that of the Indonesian films to be screened during the festival.
Near the end of the video teaser as the fire reaches its destination, it lights up the IFF screen, meaning that these 'stories' will be seen during the festival. a
How was it made?
This imagery was created through the combined use of a macro and portrait 50mm lens to capture the burning material. Footage of everyday objects such as string wool and cotton balls were edited together with the dynamically lit Indonesian cultural objects like the traditional loro blonyo - the Javanese wooden statues.
